“Measure to measure”, your love’s so much pleasure”……..the opening line to Phyllis Hyman’s classic “You Know How To Love Me” is arguably one of the most recognizable lyrics from the 70′s Disco/Soul era. For those who remember we’re sure you’ll agree that this was one of the songs that defined her amazing career and hooked you from the opening snare fill. This was always a fav song of GJs Evan Landes and one he wanted to cover and sink his teeth into for sometime. For this project he enlisted the talent of one of MoHo’s favorite ‘divas,’ Indeya (“Oh Lord,” Music’s Gotcha Jumpin,” “Gonna Get By”). As we’ve come to expect she delivers a ‘tour de force’ performance and absolutely knocked it out the box! Evan and Indeya set out to stay true to the original, but did take some creative license and put a modern twist on the production and vocal arrangement. There is a tasty vocal mix along with a vocal dub & dubstrumental that are primed and ready for launch!

WorldDJ.com interviewed Groove Junkies and discussed influences growing up, upcoming projects, “Black Man In The White House”, MoreHouse Records, WMC ’09, and the future.

Soulful house legends Groove Junkies, have made a long-lasting impact on the dance music world with their many years experience on the global circuit and producing dance floor gems for over a decade – from their first worldwide release “Everybody Needs To Be Loved” in 1997, to the more recent creation featuring Rick Keller “Black Man In The White House”, literally historic, global news this month. Evan and Parrish chat to WorldDJ.com about their influential musical beginnings and what’s happening in 2009.

» What type of music was playing in your neighborhoods growing up?
Evan: Lots of rock, soul, funk, Latin, and standards. Everything from the Beatles, The Who, Led Zep, The Stones, Allman Bros, James Brown, Temptations, O Jay’s, Teddy Pendergrass, Sly and the Family Stone, Quincy Jones, Tito Puente, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, etc.
Parrish: I was the one playing the music in my neighborhood, lol. My Dad had an amazing, and I do mean amazing eight track collection. You name it he had it, be it Jazz, rock, Latin, soul/R&B, funk, disco, blues, gospel, even some classical stuff. I won’t even begin to try and name all the artists but back in the day you could pretty much roll by my house and either me or my dad would have something pumpin’ in the house or from the car (during our car washing sessions, lol). The neighborhood kids would always come by and hang out because we always had the jams flowin’.

» Tell us a little about your years following the sounds of early house before forming Groove Junkies?
Evan: I was more of a disco, soul, funk guy in the late seventies through the early 80s, and even played a lot of the new wave cuts and rock throughout this period. Admittedly, I was a little late discovering house, but as the 80s came to a close I started to get into it. My knowledge was limited to some of the pioneering Chicago artists but eventually my record collection and love for the genre grew, and it’s been running through my veins ever since.
Parrish: I discovered the genre in the late 80s and was drawn in by the productions and DJing of the legends such as Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, and MAW. There were other folks I loved too, like Todd Terry, Basement Boys, Murk, 95 North, Kerri Candler, Inner City, and MK some of which came around in the early 90s. Let’s not forget the amazing record labels like Strictly Rhythm, King St, Sub-Urban, Nervous, Maxi, Kult, Large, Eightball, Azuli and AM/PM to name a few. In the late 80s and early 90s, even major record labels were putting great dance projects and remixes out.

» Who were your strongest influences in music that ultimately lead you to become house producers?
Evan: For me, Gamble and Huff, Quincy Jones, Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards.
Parrish: For music in general, Quincy Jones, James Brown, the Chic Boys (Bernard and Nile), George Duke, and Roy Ayers. For house music there are the folks I mentioned in the previous question as well as others that came on the scene later like Spen, Karizma, Grant Nelson, Jazz-n-Groove, and Knee Deep. These guys were what I considered to be the next generation of house producers in the late 90s. Almost anything they released I would play it without hesitation because the music was hot.

» What can we expect from your label MoreHouse Records over the next few months?
Evan: There’s plenty going on for early 2009. Some upcoming MoreHouse releases include a nasty little cut we did feat. Wendy Brune’ called “Shut Up N’ Dance” (the 2nd single from our forthcoming artist album “In The Zone”), and a very cool retrospective full length album “MoHo Vaults” Vol. 1 (Best of MoreHouse – mixed and unmixed) which features handpicked MoHo nuggets from our back catalogue.
Upcoming on our new sister label MoHo 180 are two hot new releases – one from UK production team, Stuttering Munx with a fierce tech house track called “Toasted Tubes”, and UK vocalist Jocasta with the ultra catchy “Girls Are Evil”. There’s also our ongoing weekly branded party, MoHo Los Angeles, which is an intimate house party where we bring our vibe and energy to one of LA’s hippest spots. It gives Parrish, myself, and Solara the opportunity to spread the GJ/MoHo love every Friday night when we’re in town.
March of 2009 will mark the two year anniversary of our very successful MoHo Stereo Radio Show. Parrish and I will continue to showcase the hottest upfront cuts from today’s freshest talent each and every month. The show is currently airing throughout five continents, and we’re looking forward to expanding our global reach even further to additional cities throughout the world in 2009.
We’re also getting ready to launch our online shop which will feature exclusive downloads, MoHo Gear and Merchandise. Our shops will be available on all social networks as well as our website. Be on the lookout for all the above.
